Like it or not, old man winter is here and ever since the #BombCyclone hit, our skin simply hasn’t been able to recover from its effects. Luckily, it’s goop Beauty Director, Jean Godfrey-June to the rescue with some skincare tips that will not only save your skin but get you glowing in no time! When we were invited to a private event at The Detox Market last fall to meet with Jean, we could hardly contain our excitement and we may have been the first ones there because, hello — it’s goop, duh!
Jean not only shared her go-to skincare tips but also gave us a run down of how she got into natural beauty. It was after a marketing director of a major beauty brand asked her to focus on the fact that their products aren’t harmful that she realized it had never occurred to her that beauty products could be harmful in the first place. It sparked her interest to start becoming more knowledgable about beauty ingredients, eventually leading her to a cleaner routine and her love for her role at goop. Keeping reading for Jean’s top 5 skincare tips!
Switch to clean sunscreen
The ingredients found in generic sunscreen are appalling and Jean is adamant that we make the switch ASAP. These chemicals are the most “irritating chemicals in the beauty industry, and it’s something you’re putting on your face as a daily anti-aging treatment,” she shared in an interview with The Coveteur, “if it’s causing irritation, that can lead to inflammation, and inflammation is the root of all aging.” Not only can un-clean sunscreen harm you but if you’re using it at the beach, it can also degrade coral so this year and especially for summer, we will def be making the switch to clean organic sunscreen!
Avoid fragrance when listed as an ingredient
There’s a loophole that made sense a long time ago when perfumers wanted to keep their scent formulas secret from one another. Now, of course, anyone can make any smell, but the law now states that you can put anything into that ingredient, call it ‘fragrance’ on the label, and not disclose what it is. This is super scary for those of us with sensitive skin or if you’re someone who wants to avoid certain ingredients like parabens. To be sure of what you’re putting on your skin, Jean says it’s best to avoid anything that lists ‘fragrance’ in their product.
Use the Insta-Facial (Gwyneth’s Fave)
Any fave of GP is a fave of ours so when Jean revealed that Gwyneth’s top pick is the Exfoliating Instant Facial, we needed to get our hands on a jar too. This one-jar-wonder exfoliates (obvi!) but also tightens and soothes skin with mix of natural alpha and beta hydroxy acids, plant-based cellulose beads and vitamin B5. Jean’s tip with this product is to use it before you cleanse and your cleanser will almost work double time and give your skin the deep clean it deserves!

Use face oil even if you have oily skin
When we hear oil, we immediately think greasy and Jean debunked this beauty myth by saying that even if you have oily/acne prone skin, you should still be using a face oil. The common misconception, June told us, is that when you have acne prone/oily skin, you don’t want to slather on moisturizer because it will fuel blemishes and the acne will never stop. WRONG! When you deprive your skin of moisture like creams and face oils, your skin will create double the amount of moisture to counteract what it’s lacking.
Loves May Lindstrom for acne-prone skin
For teens and adults alike, we all struggle with breakouts and it can sometimes feel like you’ll never find a solution. That is until JGJ shared that her go-to skin saver is May Lindstrom Skin The Problem Solver and not only is it fun to use but it actually heals the skin. Simply mix this miracle charcoal and clay powder with water and gently brush it onto your face and leave for 45 minutes (you heard us!) before rinsing to reveal new and improved skin.
