7 of The Best Condiments From TO Companies You Need In Your Pantry

By Gracie Carroll

By now we’re all too familiar with the importance of having a stocked pantry – but instead of packing it full with basic dry goods, why not make sure you’ve got a top-shelf selection of the best condiments from local companies right here in Toronto? Whether you prefer to indulge in the finer things while dining at home, or you are simply trying to figure out how to make a plain bowl of pasta or piece of toast taste better, here’s my round-up of the best condiments from TO companies that you need to have in your pantry. Trust me, I can’t live without ’em in mine!

Hot Eggplant from Edna’s Pickles

I first discovered Edna’s Pickles and her amazing jar of Hot Eggplant through one of my favourite neighbourhood shops, Spruce on Parliament. If you’ve got nothing but a bowl of rice to make for dinner, trust me when I say having this jar of pickled eggplant in your fridge will help turn that sad bowl into a happy meal. Edna is a pickling master who isn’t afraid of heat – see her full range on her web shop that includes Tangy Lime, Savoury Carrots, Super Spicy Mango and more!

Terroni Peperoncini Piccanti

Ensuring I always have a jar of Terroni’s Peperoncini Piccanti in my home has been a secret weapon of mine for years now. Wondering how you can take a simple pasta dish with nearly nothing in it to Terroni level? Add some Terroni Peperoncini Piccanti on top. Seriously, whether it’s the best pasta you’ve ever made at home, or even something not-so-great, everything will be better (and you can almost trick yourself into thinking you’re eating at a Terroni) when you’ve got these hot Italian peppers on hand. Bonus: they’re good on pretty much everything else too!

Terroni Peperoncini Piccanti, $13.50

Kozlik’s Mustard (All Of Them)

What kind of fridge doesn’t have at least one great mustard happily sitting within it? If you’re a true mustard connoisseur, then there’s a good chance you’ve got at least half a dozen (or more) gourmet mustards lining your fridge door. Kozlik’s Mustard is a local staple and an absolute must-have when it comes to the best condiments from Canada. They’ve been making great mustard for over 60 years and have an impressive range to choose from. It can be hard not to fill your cart with every option possible but if you’re limiting yourself to just one, the Dijon Classique is a great place to start.

Kozlik’s Mustard, $6 each

Healthy Genie’s Date & Tahini Spread

If you’re a fan of sweet and savoury flavours mixed together (especially when they’re good for you too) then make Healthy Genie’s Date & Tahini Spread the next treat you buy for yourself. Delicious on a piece of toast or on a cracker with a bit of cheese (seriously it will take your cheese board to the next level) I’m totally obsessed with this amazing blend created by nutritionist and founder, Maryam Munaf. Bonus: it’s vegan, all natural and made with no added sugar.

Healthy Genie Date & Tahini Spread, $10

Beekeeper’s Naturals Superfood Cacao Honey

Looking to get your daily chocolate fix through the best source possible? Enter the Superfood Cacao Honey from Beekeeper’s Naturals. Not only will this spread ‘meet the answer to your chocolate prayers’ but it combines their signature raw honey with organic, raw Ecuadorian cacao.

Beekeeper’s NaturalsSuperfood Cacao Honey, $24

Kitten & Bear Jam

A go-to staple in the city’s west end for an afternoon tea, complete with homemade buttermilk scones and, of course, their signature French-style jams, Kitten and The Bear is a brand to know for any jam lover out there who’s looking to support a great local company. Using only the finest ingredients and time-honoured methodology, these jams are made from local produce as much as possible and most ingredients are sourced from family-owned farms. From the classics to their house signatures, you can shop them all online and have them delivered to your door.

Kitten and The Bear’s Damsun Plum & Earl Grey Jam, $12

Drake Commissary Hot Sauce (and Maple Syrup)

The Drake always knocks it out of the park and there’s no exception when it comes to their pantry and kitchen staples that are now (thankfully!) available to order online through their Larder Shop. To be honest, I think you could happily fill your entire pantry and fridge with all of the goods that the Drake Commissary produces, but in the interest of sticking to the theme of this list of best condiments, I’m highlighting their epic Habanero Hot Sauce, as well as their County Maple Syrup (because I couldn’t choose between the two).

Drake Commissary Habanero Hot Sauce, $7, County Maple Syrup, $14.
