Tip 1: Invest in multifunctional furniture
If you have a small balcony, a coffee table that can double as seating or storage will help you utilize the space. And, in a backyard, furniture that also doubles as storage can help hide the kids’ toys or gardening tools, leaving your space clear when entertaining.
Tip 2: Add plants
Adding greenery will immediately make your space more inviting. You can also bring in a specific colour palette with flowers, which can tie in this season’s trends at a small cost.
Tip 3: Vertical gardens (real or artificial)
Green walls are an efficient way of using space vertically and creating an interesting talking point, no matter how big or small. Bonus: they also offer added privacy and help eliminate noise. For something that’s more low maintenance, consider an artificial hedge.
Tip 4: Utilize accessories
Fill the gaps of your space, and add your own personal style with cushions, throws, and rugs. Choose your colour palette ahead of time to be efficient when shopping, and look at soft textures to add comfort to your space.
Tip 5: Invest in furniture covers
Not the most exciting purchase, but covers will help keep your furniture safe over the winter months and cut down maintenance or repairs and replacements year after year. They will also allow you to store your furniture outside instead of having to find space in your condo or home.
Tip 6: Design for your lifestyle and needs
Think about how you will use the space: Drinks al fresco? Ensure you have table surfaces for your beverages. Yoga outside? Create a space and storage for your equipment. Love to read in the sunshine? Create a comfy nook with a chair and pillow. Once you identify your needs, creating a space flows easily.
Tip 7: Finish it off with lighting
Custom lighting immediately elevates your space. If you are working with a smaller footprint, add string lighting above. If you have room to spare, lanterns add an elegant design element while introducing ambient lighting. Avoid LED lights, as they can be brightly harsh; soft lighting will introduce a romantic touch to your own outdoor oasis.
