It’s no secret that long winters are a major part of life in Canada, but for some reason, so many of us loathe the season and complain about it all year long. Recently, I came across an article by Fast Company on The Norwegian Secret To Enjoy a Long Winter, and found it so refreshing to read about folks who actually embrace the colder weather and lack of sunshine. I agree that enjoying winter more can be achieved by changing your outlook and attitude towards it, even when weather conditions get tough. Growing up in a family obsessed with winter sports (we used to drive to Quebec multiple times each winter to ski and snowboard), the first snowfall was always an exciting time that signified the fun to come and it was never something we complained about. Although regular ski trips are unfortunately no longer a regular occurrence in my life, I do believe that the positivity surrounding winter as kids still helps me look forward to it as an adult. Like everyone else, by March I’m oh-so-over-it, but, until then, I often enjoy embracing winter and indulging in ‘Cozy Season’ for as long as I possibly can. If you’re interested in finding more joy in winter, here are some of the ways I like to make it a season I look forward to:
I Look Forward to Holiday Parties
Being a fan of cooking and hosting, I tend to look forward to the holidays for even more of a reason to invite friends and family over. I also love going over to the homes of others to stay cozy inside and eat, drink and be merry together. Of course, hosting at your own home doesn’t have to be the only option if you don’t want it to be. Use the holidays as an excuse to go out for dinner and drinks with your favourite people at a new restaurant, or one of your go-to’s.
I Dress In Luxe Knits, Like Cashmere
Yes, wearing multiple layers and big sweaters is undeniably more effort than throwing on an easy, breezy summer dress, but I find that wearing knits is significantly more enjoyable when they’re super soft and warm, like cashmere. I am literally obsessed with wearing cashmere from head-to-toe and have everything from multiple cashmere sweaters to jogging pants. In fact, I’m currently on the hunt for cashmere PJs so if you know where to get a pair please let me know! Purchasing cashmere can be pricey but it doesn’t always have to be. You can find quality pieces in great condition second hand, or even Joe Fresh has great cashmere sweaters that won’t break the bank.
I Moisturize Like Crazy
Dry skin is something we all suffer from during the winter months, which is why I try to combat it, rather than just complain about it. I always step-up my skin care game when it gets cold out and like to make sure that every step is super hydrating. As a busy new mom, I definitely know how hard it can be to keep up with an intense skin care regime when you’re short on time, so these days I stick to the necessities like using Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Wash while I’m in the shower, followed by applying the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion all over my body. I love that both of these products are deeply moisturizing, completely unscented and don’t irritate my sensitive skin. Best of all, the lotion is lightweight, so you don’t have to worry about waiting around for it to absorb before getting dressed.
I Look Forward to Spending Time Indoors
As someone who is always on the go, the wintertime can be a nice reminder to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life, like a great book or shutting off from work and simply sitting down to watch a great movie in the evenings. If you tend to have trouble sitting still (as I do) spending more time indoors during the winter can provide you with a great opportunity to start re-organizing or purging early so that come spring you’re all caught up and ready to get back to living your best life outdoors.
I Curl Up Under Blankets
Like a fabulous new coat, I find it very hard to deny a cozy blanket or throw. In fact, I literally have piles of them all around my house! During the winter, I like to take advantage of the opportunity to stay in comfy and cozy clothing, while taking it to another level with a pair of great slippers and a plush blanket. Add a stack of magazines or cookbooks next to me and a glass of wine and I’m in heaven!
I Enjoy Festive Hot Drinks
From Hot Cider to Mulled Wine… there are drinks to look forward to when winter comes around! Thankfully, they’re all easy enough to make at home (and even make your house smell amazing!) so grab what you need and call a few friends to come over and enjoy it with you. Of course, you can make non-alcoholic versions that are equally as festive and delicious!
I Find Beauty In Winter Weather
Now, before you start to think I’ve lost the plot, hear me out: winter can be really beautiful. Sure, I also find it hard to see the beauty in dark, grey days full of slushy streets, but, it’s hard to deny the beauty of a stunningly sunny day in the dead of winter, with fresh white snow that sparkles in the sunlight. Am I right? Layer up, wear fabrics that actually keep you warm (hint: wool) and go outside for a gorgeous walk.
