Any snack connoisseur knows that the struggle can be all too real when it comes to finding healthy snacks that are actually tasty too. Unfortunately for me, my 30-year-old body has taught me that I can no-longer enjoy many of my favourite snacks the way that I used to, which has resulted in the constant hunt for healthier options that are just as satisfying. As I’m sure many of you fellow savoury-toothed foodies out there can relate to, chips have always been a weakness of mine; but these days indulging in a bag of greasy chips not only makes me feel awful after, but results in an almost immediate breakout on my forehead by the next morning. Like, it’s not cute.
Enter my latest snack discovery that has totally changed the game: SPOKES. Unlike traditional potato chips, SPOKES is an air-puffed potato snack that is gluten-free, never oil fried, contains no preservatives and made in a peanut-free facility. As it says right on their package, SPOKES says ‘hello to clean crisp flavour’ and ‘bye bye to bad stuff’.
As you can probably imagine, I’ve tried a fair amount of ‘healthy’ alternatives to chips during my quest to find the best options and HOLY HECK I have seriously never come across anything I’ve loved as much as SPOKES for A. The taste factor and B. The calorie count. Not only do these lil’ crispy and crunchy puffed potato wheels come in foodie-approved flavours like Sea Salt & Vinegar, Mango Habanero, Barbecue and Fiesta Salsa, but an entire cup of these snacks will only set you back 40 calories. To give you an idea, regular potato chips would normally contain up to 150 calories per cup!
While eating SPOKES straight out of the bag is truly a joyous experience, I wanted to put them to the test to see if they could hold up to my ‘dip test’ to find out just how well they combined with other flavours, and if they could be used to dip into one of my favourite homemade dips without crumbling. The result? Oh these babies did not disappoint. Despite their lightness, they had no problem scooping up my favourite creamy vegan white bean and rosemary dip that’s one of my go-to’s to whip up before a crowd comes over.

What You Need:
- 1 x 19oz can of white kidney beans (or navy beans); rinsed and drained
- 1/2 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1/4 cup Tahini
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1/2 tsp of Salt
- 1/4 tsp Chili Flakes
- Fresh Ground Pepper
- 2 Garlic cloves
- 1 tsp (loosely packed) of fresh rosemary, chopped.
What To Do:
- Place all ingredients into a high-powered blender (such as a Vitamix) or a food processor.
- Blend until smooth or only slightly chunky.
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed (note that you can add more or pretty much any of the ingredients to suite your own taste preferences)
- Pour the dip into a bowl and garnish with fresh ground pepper, extra chilli flakes and a small sprig of fresh rosemary.
- Serve on a platter alongside SPOKES and fresh veggies.
