Mother’s Day 2020 is just around the corner and while we all want to spoil mom (even from a distance) there’s never been a more important time to think carefully about how and where we choose to spend our money on Mother’s Day gifts this year. Small businesses are hurting more than ever right now and every dollar your spend – no matter whether the purchase is big or small – can make a major difference when it comes to their survival.
We are, and always have been, advocates for supporting local businesses in Toronto (and beyond) so we can’t say that our round-up of our top mother’s day gift ideas would look that different if we weren’t dealing with a lockdown right now, but, we do hope that during this time you will really think who you choose to support while trying to spoil the mama in your life (even if that mama is you) this year.
Keep reading for our top mother’s day gift ideas that support local businesses in Toronto!
For The Mama That Loves: FLOWERS
Floral Workshop Webinar: even if you can’t spend time with your favourite mama in person this Mother’s Day, there are still ways to connect and “do” something fun “together”. If you’re in Toronto, tickets to ReBLOOM‘s online flower arranging workshop will provide you with a contactless delivery of flowers to use at home while following the workshop online. You can FaceTime with your mom or friends while tuning in, and, bonus: yours truly will be co-hosting the webinar! More importantly, for every ticket sold, a bouquet will be donated to women’s shelters in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.
On-Demand Bouquet Delivery: Forever our go-to company for on-demand flower delivery service in Toronto, Tonic Blooms is here to get that (pre-arranged) bouquet with major WOW factor to your mama’s doorstep just in time.
Same-Day Plant Delivery: for the plant-lady mama in your life, consider getting her a new plant baby that will live longer than a freshly cut bouquet of florals. Merchants of York are offering same-day delivery in Toronto and have a beautiful selection that includes plants such as Monstera, Plumeria and even Calamondin Orange.
For The Mama That Loves: SELF CARE
A Virtual Facial: If you normally treat mama to a spa day for Mother’s Day, consider purchasing a ticket to join Elmwood Spa‘s virtual facial event. Treat mom (or yourself) by signing up online to receive a kit with all the professional Guinot products used in their Radiance Foundation Facial and access to a live Zoom session. Senior Manager of Spa Services, Heather MacKay, will guide participants through the facial, step-by-step. Kits can be purchased here for $65 each and are available in two types: hydration and anti-aging.
Best Brands For Products: There is no shortage of amazing skin care brands in Toronto so it can sometimes become difficult to know where to start. Our top recommendations? Try bath salts and the Steam Facial from Gold Apothecary, the face mists and face oils from Cardea AuSet, body scrubs and candles from Cela Skin, and body oil from Province Apothecary.
The Ultimate Treat: if the mama you’re shopping for definitely ain’t new to the beloved jade roller, then take things to the next level with this epic jade eye mask we spotted on one of our fave new local online shops, The Lake. For the tired mama, or the mama who loves a sheet mask moment at home (or both), this is definitely a gift that will make her squeal with delight.
For The Mama That Loves: LOUNGE WEAR
A Great Robe: Lockdown or no lockdown there’s no denying that lazy days spent at home are always better in a chic and slinky robe. We are big fans of the beautiful robes made by Soft Focus that look fantastic over their lounge sets – or with nothing worn underneath. PS. These are also available via The Lake.
Beautiful Lingerie: undergarments that are sexy and comfy do exist, and they happen to be made in Toronto too. We love everything from the patterns, colours, fabrics to fits from Fortnight Lingerie and know any mama would be thrilled to slip into a set from this amazing local brand. Tip: they make great swimwear too!
The Best Dress: We nearly shed tears when we found out that Erin Kleinberg was returning to her designer roots by bringing back her infamous dress, but this time with a brand called Out of Office NYC that’s solely dedicated to her popular silhouette. Let’s call this one an haute-muumuu because this easy shift dress is seriously the comfiest thing mama will ever wear, and (thankfully) she’ll look cool wearing it too. Trust us, this is one of our mother’s day gift ideas that we strongly suggest!
For The Mama That Loves: FITNESS
Free Virtual Workout: if mama’s missing out a good sweat session, sign her up for the free virtual City Shred: Mother’s Day Edition taking place on Saturday May 9th at 12pm. The one-hour sweat session will give moms (& single dads) an opportunity to unite with hundreds for a workout filled with gratitude & gains. This City Shred event, with badass moms in mind, will incorporate Pilates, Yoga, HiiT Training, Mindfulness and tons of awesome prizes, too.
The Studio (Video) Subscription: we’re all missing classes in our favourite fitness studios right now, but that doesn’t mean mama has to miss out on her favourite workouts altogether. Our top pick? Treat mama to an annual subscription to access Misfitstudio‘s online videos until she visit again IRL.
The Workout Gear: make her home workouts more fun with the most stylish gear in the game, courtesy of MICHI NY of course. Don’t let the ‘NY’ in their name fool you – MICHI is a Toronto-based brand!
For The Mama That Loves: JEWELLERY
The Gothic Charm: her initial, your initial, her babe’s initial – everyone’s initials? We’re currently obsessed with every letter of the alphabet when it comes in solid gold, gothic lettering from Lucia Rose. DM to get your order in now.
An Engraved Cuff: In search of something special that can be engraved? The Miro cuff (available in brass and silver) is not only made in Distillery District-based studio of Michelle Ross, but comes with complimentary monogramming with up to six letters or numbers included.
Affordable Diamonds: What mama doesn’t love a good sparkle? We love that Toronto based Mejuri makes purchasing everyday diamonds way more affordable, and creates pieces that make diamonds easy to wear everyday too. Our top pick? The coveted Single Diamonds Line Mini Hoop earrings.
For The Mama That Loves: WINE
Wine & The Snacks: surprise and delight mama with a carefully curated selection of amazing wines and local snacks from the Grape Witches. Their all French packs are live for May deliveries and include your choice of snacks from chocolate to fancy tinned fish.
The Fancy Chiller: does mama love a good gold glass of chardonnay? Help her take her wine-indulging experience to a new level of chic with this amazing green marble wine chiller that’s available via The Cocktail Emporium.
Bring The Vineyard Home: not only is Pearl Morissette considered to be one of the best vineyards in Ontario (or Canada, really) but their wines can be particularly hard to track down. They’re currently offering free delivery for all orders placed through their website so why not treat mom to a case of their beautiful wines?
Cheers to the mamas!
