One of the best parts about being a beauty writer and editor is that you get to research, see and try the latest and greatest skin-care and makeup brands have to offer. And there are a lot of new products. Which, if I’m being honest, despite the perks, can make it difficult to narrow it down to what was the best. And the truth is, we all have out favourites. So, I asked a few fellow beauty writers and editors to share their own personal favourite products from the last year. Unsurprisingly, everyone had a different pick—but these are gems you’re going to want to add to your makeup bag and vanity stat.
Stila Micro Tip Stay All Day Liquid Liner
“The launch of Stila’s Micro Tip Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner earlier last year truly changed the way I do my makeup. The original Stay All Day has been my go-to liquid liner for years and years, because the formula is unbeatable in my opinion, but I always found the felt tip just a liiiiitle too long and flimsy for my shaky hands. The micro tip is the perfect solution and allows for a perfect cat eye every.single.time. After the launch, I wrote about it online, in print, and as you can see, am still raving about it months later.” – Suzie Michael, former Fashion Magazine beauty editor, currently freelance beauty writer
Smashbox Super Fan Mascara
“My pick of best beauty product of the year is Smashbox’s Super Fan Mascara. I’m super picky about mascara because my eyes are hooded and my eyelids are on the oily side, so most mascaras smudge very easily. I need a mascara that’s going to fan out my lashes and open up my eye area, without any smearing. On the other hand, I can’t stand waterproof mascaras or any formulas that get all gluey and require an extra step to remove it, ripping off my lash hairs in the process. Enter Smashbox Super Fan Mascara. I love that it lifts and separates my lashes without any heaviness or flaking, and it pretty much comes off with water. Hashtag #babe, Hashtag #momlife, Hashtag #forthewin.” – Carlene Higgins, co-host of Breaking Beauty Podcast
Omorovicza Acid Fix
“I’m nothing if not skin care obsessed, and this sleek Omorovicza Acid Fix vial is packed with all my fave ingredients such as glycolic, salicylic and lactic acids. Sounds intense, but, when applied before bed, the serum-like formula delivers a gentle exfoliation so I wake up to smoother, clearer and hydrated skin. For an extra boost, I double up with a layer of the brand’s cushiony Midnight Radiance Mask on top—thanks to a hot tip I picked up from the co-founder Stephen de Heinrich.” – Ingrie Williams, beauty director at Best Health Magazine
BareMinerals BarePro 16-Hour Full Coverage Concealer
“BareMinerals BarePro 16-Hour Full Coverage Concealer is one of the best I’ve ever tried. Opaque and pigmented enough to effectively cover blemishes and scars, it’s also creamy enough to use under the eyes. I love that it stays put all day, too, and has the added benefits of bamboo stem extract to improve the look of pores and fine lines, plus antioxidant-rich and nourishing raspberry seed oil, blackcurrant seed oil and sea lavender.” – Janna Zittrer Appleby, editorial director at Editors Inc.
Dermalogica BioLumin-C Serum
“I love Dermalogica’s new BioLumin-C Serum. Unlike other Vitamin C serums, this one doesn’t smell like a hot dog (seriously!), it isn’t tacky and it doesn’t leave your skin with an orange tinge after applying.” – Erinn Stewart, beauty writer
BeautyCounter Dew Skin Moisturizing Coverage
“Honestly, I didn’t think my favourite product of the year would be a tinted moisturizer—I tend to save my rave reviews for effective skin care, not makeup. But I love this product. BeautyCounter Dew Skin Moisturizing Coverage offers up sheer coverage that evens out skin tone and minimizes redness, all while giving you a true lit-from-within glow. And the best part is it feels moisturizing and my skin still feels and looks like skin. (You know what I mean). This is thanks to an all-natural formula packed with black currant, peony flower root extract and vitamin C. I’m almost at the end of my tube, so I’ll be stocking up for this year, stat.” – Alexandra Donaldson, writer and Edit Seven contributor
RMS Living Luminizer in Champagne Rosé
“When you’re scraping the last bit of product from a container, you know it’s the beginning of a new relationship. And that’s what happened to me when I first encountered RMS Living Luminizer in Champagne Rosé, nestled in a quad with three other highlighters. After loving the OG Luminizer for several years, finding a shade that was even more compatible with my skin (which has pink undertones) felt like I had struck skin sculpting gold. The single pot of this magical hue is never more than five feet away from me, as I must have it at all times. The texture melts into skin, subtly lifting my face and bouncing light—I apply it to brow bones cheekbones, and a little on my forehead above my brow arch. And always, always apply it *before* your under eye concealer to bounce light—that way, you’ll need less concealer. It’s become my new fuchsia lipstick, meaning: I can’t be photographed without it.” – Katherine Flemming, beauty and health writer
