As stewards of Mother Earth, it’s our responsibility to make sure that we don’t contribute to all the waste and plastics piling up on landfills. And what better way to do this than start at home? Simply swapping single-use plastic products with zero-waste and plastic-free ones can already make a huge difference in our environment.

Remember, people, waste adds up! While you might think that today’s takeout in a plastic container isn’t a big deal or using plastic straw for your iced coffee won’t make a difference, trust us when we say they all add up.

So with all these said, here are seven home products to swap to make your home more plastic-free and zero-waste! And, remember, just because their sustainable or organic, doesn’t mean they’re not pretty!

Zwilling Fresh & Save Food Container

Replace your plastic food containers and disposable ziplock bags with reusable, plastic-free vacuum containers.

What we love about this is that unlike other food containers wherein your stored food can easily go to waste, the Fresh & Save containers preserve flavours and nutrients, prevents freezer burn, and keeps food fresh up to five times longer! We especially love that it’s a space-saver, and it’s microwave-, freezer-, dishwasher-safe, and heat-resistant!

Porter Bags

Another alternative to ziplock bags are these reusable silicone Porter Bags. What we love about it is it’s thoughtfully designed with curved corners, so there’s nowhere for pesky buildup to hide and it’s easy to clean. What’s more is that it’s 100 percent made from food-grade silicone with no chemicals, glues, or adhesives.

Reusable Straws

Before we knew it, plastic straws took over the world — with 2,000 tons of them polluting the ocean yearly. Do we need to contribute to it more? The solution? Reusable straws. There are a lot of selections to choose from — paper straws, steel straws, glass straws, bamboo straws, and more. There are even artistic straws you can buy for your quirky needs!

Reusable Cleaning Products

zero-waste cleaning products from Blueland

Every time you buy cleaning products, their plastic packaging add up and end up in landfills. And even though, you have your own reusable bottles or containers for your soaps, detergents, and/or cleaners, their refills probably still come in plastic packaging. So why not swap them altogether?

Blueland, a US-based brand, offers zero-plastic and zero-waste cleaning products and hand soaps, from their packaging to their refills. Once you get your starter kit, which contains your tritan and glass Forever Bottles, all you need to purchase thereafter are the refills, which come in compostable packaging. What’s more: their formulas are VOC-, paraben-, ammonia-, pthalates-, and chlorine bleach-free!

Plastic-Free Haircare Products

shampoo and conditioner bars from Good Juju

Local brand Good Juju offers zero-waste solid shampoo and conditioner bars. What’s more, one shampoo bar is equivalent to three shampoo bottles, lasting 75 washes! Isn’t that so much more affordable?

What we also love about this product is that it’s hair-safe, meaning it’s pH balanced, formulated for hair of all ethnicities, and safe for colour-treated hair. All the shampoo and conditioner bars are also made with certified organic ingredients and are free from SLS, hormone-disrupting parabens, and synthetic fragrances and dyes. Each bar also targets different hair and scalp types. So whether you have oily, fine, curly, or balanced hair, there’s a shampoo and conditioner perfect for you!

Plastic-Free Takeout

Toronto serves 39 million takeout meals every year. This means we’re producing 78 million pieces of waste from takeout alone! Suppli, a Toronto-local company, aims to reduce this by partnering up with local restaurants to provide reusable containers instead of disposable containers. By ordering through Suppli or at their partner restaurants, you’re eliminating single-plastic use. What we also love about it is it’s easy to use. Simply sign up, order, rinse the reusable container, and return! Totally hassle-free and zero-waste!

Bamboo Electric Toothbrush

Did you know that one billion toothbrushes are thrown away annually in the United States alone, and they won’t biodegrade even after 100 years? This is 50 million pounds of waste that sometimes ends in waterways and oceans! By using bamboo toothbrushes, which are biodegradable btw, you’re ending your contribution to this waste.

What we love about this bamboo electric toothbrush is that it’s not only environment-friendly but it also has five cleaning modes: cleaning, whitening, polishing, sensitive, and gum care. It also has a two-minute timer — exactly how long you should brush your teeth!
