2017 has been a challenging year for me, personally, and the emotional highs and lows have made it difficult to keep up with my own #GCfit goals. Every month it felt as though I would get back into a fitness routine just as quickly as I would fall out of it again. There’s been no consistency, low motivation and a constant feeling of guilt because of this. Seeking some help to get me back into my fitness game, I reached out to Equinox Group Fitness Instructor, Mike Arlotto, for some of his tip to get back on the workout wagon after falling off of it, again and again. If you’ve been in the same boat that I’ve been in, I hope these tips will help you find that fire once again. See below for Mike’s Top 5 Tips to help you get back in the gym (for good):
1. It’s only temporary.
If you happen to “fall off the fitness wagon”, it can be helpful to remember that lapses in your fitness routine are common and part of the overall process to becoming and staying fit. Think of these inactive times as temporary breaks instead of end points that completely derail your fitness goals forever. Hop right back on the wagon where you left off, and get back into it!
2. Eliminate the excuses.
Sometimes getting back to the gym is the hardest part because of the excuses we create in our minds for why we shouldn’t go. “I went to bed too late last night”, “The weather is awful”, “Work was so busy today”. Eliminate all the excuses and just get there.
3. Do what you love.
Yes, this applies to fitness as well. Get back into it by finding an activity that you enjoy. There are plenty of options and there is something for everyone! Get out there, explore what how you like to move, and have a blast!
4. Whether you think you can, or you can’t, you’re right.
It all starts with our thoughts; eliminate “I can’t” as one of them. Tell yourself: “Yes I can, yes I will!” Repeat it: “Yes I can, YES I WILL!” One more time: “YES I CAN, YES I WILL!”
5. Keep your eye on the prize.
What is motivating you? Be clear about what your goals are and why you committed to a fitness program in the first place. Remind yourself of the reasons often. Think about why you started. Stop wishing for it. Work for it.
