7 Products To Buy For The Ideal Post-Workout Skincare Routine

By Ainsley Smith

We all know that exercising does wonders for your body, mind, and overall health. However, if you don’t take proper care of yourself post-workout, you can put yourself at risk of injury. This goes for your skin, too. Just like it’s critical to hydrate and stretch after you exercise, it’s just as important to take care of your skin, as the built-up sweat and dirt can cause clogged pores, breakouts, chafing, and irritation.

Let’s not forget that when you workout in a gym, you’re sharing equipment with other people, who potentially haven’t disinfected things properly or washed their hands after getting their sweat on. And let’s be real, chances are, when you’re breaking out in a sweat, you most likely end up touching your face at some point, potentially spreading germs and bacteria (and maybe other people’s sweat) onto your own skin and into your pores. Gross.

And we get it, you probably have a dozen things to do after you hit the treadmill or a SoulCycle class, but it’s important not to sacrifice looking your best simply because you had to sprint out the door to your next commitment. So, to ensure your skin is looking and feeling as amazing as you feel after you workout, read on to learn about our favourite post-workout skincare tips and the products you need to buy so you can take proper care of your skin after you get your sweat on.

Always, Always, Always Wash Your Face

Once you’ve changed out of your sweaty clothes, it’s time to hit the showers and wash your face ASAP. Seriously. We recommend using a cleanser with salicylic acid, which will not only thoroughly cleanse your skin, but it works by removing debris, sweat, and oil from the pores to prevent breakouts from happening. When washing your face after you workout, make sure to be gentle and avoid scrubbing as post-workout skin is delicate and more susceptible to micro-abrasion.

Don’t Forget Your Body

You should always carve out some time to rinse off after you workout, as waiting until you get home to rinse off can lead to clogged pores and body acne. Instead, stash a deep-cleansing and gentle exfoliating body wash in your gym bag like this one from Pixi.

Cool Down

If you’re still feeling hot post-workout, this refreshing face mist, which also happens to be lightweight and sweat-proof, will help you instantly cool down. Plus, you can use it to set your makeup or throughout the day to keep your look fresh.

Tone Up

Another great way to remove excess dirt, oil, and sweat is with toning pads that contain ingredients like salicylic acid or glycolic acid, as they are great chemical peeling agents that will help remove any lingering layers of sweat or any residual makeup after you exercise.

Continue Sculpting Your Skin

Keep your workout momentum going with this powerful serum that’s designed to firm and tighten the skin. This multi-tasking serum is supercharged with a skin-plumping and anti-aging complex that will reduce wrinkles and fine lines for a noticeably firmer, more defined complexion.

Moisturize

Once you’ve washed and toned your face it’s time to moisturize to replenish the water your skin lost while you were working out. If your skin is oily or acne-prone, aim for a product like Mario Badescu’s Oil-Free Moisturizer. Or, if your skin is on the drier side, try a moisturizer that’s rich yet light enough to absorb easily into your skin, like Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer Rich.

Keep Your Glow Going

Who doesn’t love that post-yoga glow? Well, you can keep it going all day long with a cream blush that melts seamlessly into your skin for a natural flush. Plus. this one doubles as a lip tint, helping to lighten up your gym bag makeup stash.
