All of my life I’ve worn sheer liquid-based foundations. In the morning, when I’d put my foundation on before work, it looked great; my face was flawless. But after biking to the office, running from meeting to meeting, and getting lost in a day’s work, I’d run into the bathroom to check myself out in the mirror. Annoyingly, my foundation was nowhere to be seen. That’s been the case with every semi-sheer liquid foundation I’ve ever worn.
And then around 2010, I jumped on the all-natural bandwagon. I was ahead of the game. As someone who is acutely aware of my health, it made sense to me that I should throw everything away in my skincare cabinet that included any of the nasties: sodium laureth sulphate, parabens and artificial fragrance.
I searched far and wide for an all-natural foundation. I’d stroll into every health store I could find and test out the limited, small-batch selections they had on hand. Sometimes, the colour was off. (I’m Southeast Asian, with tanned skinned and yellow undertones.) Other times, it was the texture; too thick or too runny. Lastly, most of what I tried gave me the same problem as the high-street beauty brands I had previously spent hundreds of dollars on. The verdict was in: the small-batch stuff wasn’t performance makeup that could last an entire day.
Enter Nude by Nature, an Australian brand enriched with 100 percent natural ingredients, which launched in Canada this year through Shopper’s Drug Mart. Their products are completely free of talcs, parabens, synthetics and silicones. (Direct translation: you can feel good about what you’re putting on your face.)
I’ll admit that I was sceptical. How many other brands had told me they had the “perfect match” in colour as well as “long wear?” Countless. And secondly, I was weary of powder-based foundations in the way they always seemed to create the opposite of a “dewy” look, which I’ve always tried so desperately to achieve.
The Nude by Nature arsenal of products I was testing included the Cashmere Pressed Blush in Soft Coral, the Natural Glow Loose Bronzer in 01 Bondi Bronze and the Radiant Loose Powder Foundation in W5 Vanilla (it comes in 20 shades, by the way, and I’d suggest doing a colour match). The foundation’s key ingredients include everything from jojoba esters (a derivative of jojoba oil that nourishes the skin) to kakadu plum (rich in vitamin C) to kaolin clay (eliminates toxins and purifies skin).
Nude by Nature’s makeup experts suggested that I put on my blush and bronzer first, and then tap my brush into the loose powder foundation and run it all over my face. When I tried this, I was beyond impressed: my blush and bronzer looked muted and natural, like I was flushed from the sun, and the Radiant Loose Powder Foundation is clearly buildable, depending on what I was doing that day. Best of all, my skin looked dewy. #Goals.
Since trying Nude by Nature Radiant Loose Powder Foundation, I’ve used nothing else. Now, I’ll add a swipe of the brand’s Touch of Glow Highlight Stick to my cheekbones to make my face look healthy and fresh.
Every day, I’m both impressed and amazed by the product. When I get off my bike in the mornings, after a 20-minute ride to the office, and I run into the bathroom to check my face, I’m always surprised to see my makeup in tact. At 5:00 pm, after an entire day at the office, it’s still there too.
Yes, I’d been sweating; yes, I was running from meeting to meeting; yes, I had no time to re-apply. But after all of that, my foundation was still on, and I am still glowing. What else in the world could a woman ask for?
I adore the Nude by Nature Radiant Loose Powder Foundation so much that I wanted more of the Edit Seven team to try it too. Here’s what they have to say about it:
Gracie Carroll, Edit Seven’s Editor-in-Chief
“Finding natural makeup that actually performs is no easy feat, especially if you’re trying to find chic packaging too! There are so many things I love about Nude by Nature; I love that it’s almost vegan, I love that the packaging is super luxe, and I really love that it works just as well as any major (non-vegan) makeup line out there. I also love how quick and easy it is to apply, and the natural coverage it gives. My daily makeup routine is simple and takes less than five minutes to do so I enjoy that this powder fits right in. It gives me just the right amount of coverage but still feels like I’ve got nothing on which, personally, I really like.” – Gracie
Blair Stutz, Edit Seven’s Assistant Editor
“As someone who’s always been a full coverage foundation lover, I was a little skeptical trying a powder foundation but this Nude by Nature powder foundation has proved me wrong. Application is super easy and quick which is a must for me as someone who’s constantly on the go and the powder melts into the skin instantaneously and gives you medium coverage that’s totally buildable. It’s safe to say that this product definitely replaces all the liquid foundation in my beauty cupboard!” – Blair
