How Apple Cider Vinegar Changed My Life (And Cured My Eczema)

If we met in person today, you would never be able to guess that I get eczema all over my face. It’s something that’s been going on for about 10 years, and I’ve tried cutting out all major allergens throughout the years; gluten, dairy, alcohol. It’s helped at times, but never solved the problem. I used to say I was allergic to dairy and gluten but I hated being that person–you know the one going to restaurants and dinner parties who couldn’t eat anything. Besides, I’m French. How could I live a life without bread, cheese and wine?

The way I discovered I wasn’t actually allergic to gluten or dairy (often the root cause of my eczema flare ups) was while I was visiting family in the south of France last summer. I was on holiday and the only vinegar I had on hand was Apple Cider Vinegar. So I was eating salads with ACV dressing twice a day, every day. My skin miraculously cleared up and looked better than ever. When I got back to Toronto, my face was covered in eczema within days. Was it the Mediterranean air and diet, the sun, the salt in the sea, less processed foods? Maybe. But then I remembered the Apple Cider Vinegar that I had been consuming with almost every meal while I was there.

In the past, I’d read a lot about how eczema is the result of a bad gut. Your gut is everything. Research now shows that many diseases are gut related. And there are even scientists calling the gut the second brain. Until now, the brain has always been considered to be the centre of the body. And while your gut can’t reason or post on Instagram, it can affect the health of your entire body. This includes your mood, digestion, immune system, and mental well-being. Long story short, if you have a healthy gut, you can consider yourself healthy.

Probiotics are often the first thing recommended to help heal your gut (along with fermented foods like kefir, yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, kombucha and tempeh) but, with their hefty price tag, I’ve always felt that probiotics didn’t fit into my budget. When my eczema flared up again, I decided to try diluting a little Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of water every morning to see if it would help. Low and behold, my skin cleared up again within days.

In my opinion (and experience), Apple Cider Vinegar is a sent-from-heaven, changed-my-life-forever natural product that freaking CURED my eczema! Forget about spending hundreds of dollars on probiotics. Just go to your local health food store (or sometimes even big box supermarket) and buy yourself a bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar–the queen of fermented foods. I now stockpile it because my boyfriend and I tear through it like animals. It’s very important to get it with “the mother” (that’s the good stuff) AKA the fermentation. Consider the brand Bragg’s and also getting it in glass bottles to spare the environment and your health.

I’ve now been taking ACV everyday for the past year, and although it’s an acquired taste, I’ve actually come to love it. I’ve since met countless amounts of people who have been doing the same for a wide range of reasons, the most popular one being for their immune system. I even met a woman who gave it to her two daughters growing up and they never brought sickness home from school! I can also attest to that because I haven’t gotten sick since I started taking ACV; no flu last winter and no colds. I also deal with stress and the ups and downs of being an actor a lot better.

Now, I actually notice a difference in my mood when I don’t take it for a few days. And for all my girls who get yeast infections–you know how horrible life can be when that happens–taking ACV can even help for that! Give it a try, you’ve got nothing to lose. If it hurts your stomach or disagrees with you in any way just stop the ACV and instead incorporate the fermented foods I mentioned above into your daily diet. I can’t promise this will get rid of your eczema because everyone’s body functions differently but what I can promise is it’ll fix your gut and that will stick with you forever.

I add one tablespoon in a big glass of water every morning or, when I need a little extra kick of detox, I put a teaspoon in a glass of water before every meal.
