As much as I identify as a shopaholic, I also identify as a conscious shopper. Instead of just picking up anything that catches my eye, I take a moment to think about the price (why is it so high, or low?), where it was made, and the brand itself. Better yet, does the item or the brand give back to others?
Recently I was introduced to three great accessories that I not only love for their design, but the fact that they support something great. In the case of two of these items, profits from their purchase are even donated to help those in need.
The first accessory is this amazing pair of Etnia Barcelona sunglasses. Not only are these glasses 100% eco-friendly, but 2% of global sales from the current Wild Love in Africa collection will be donated to support the Africa Rising Foundation, co-founded by Nelson Mandela’s grandsons Ndaba and Kweku Mandela.
Even though this second accessory doesn’t necessarily “give back” there is still something to be said for companies that are committed to supporting independent and emerging designers, especially in Canada. This summer, BRIKA teamed up with collaborated with artisans and designers to create an exclusive collection of summer necklaces. This ‘Nophar‘ necklace was hand dyed in the designers own kitchen in NYC.
Last but not least are the shoes. Oh yes, these shoes that were designed by Gwyneth Paltrow exclusively for Ix Style. Discovering that Queen G designed these sandals was already so exciting to me that it was almost overwhelming (in a good way) to find out that for every pair purchased, a donation is made to help provide clean water for children in Guatemala. I mean, is it even possible for a pair of $89 sandals to get any more awesome than these ones? By the way, they’re available at Holt Renfrew if you’re in Canada!
